FAQ

Questions before you buy

Short answers. The licenses have the full terms.

Other questions? support@datumhue.com

Is the workstation app really free?

Yes. It's free for any use, paid work included, with no royalties. There's nothing to activate. The first time it starts, you read its license and choose Accept.

It needs a connection to datumhue.app, and it installs the latest release each time it starts. You sign in only to buy packages or to publish.

Its license in plain words

What does it run on?

The workstation app runs on Windows, macOS (Apple Silicon) and Linux. You can also open datumhue.app in your browser, with nothing to install.

What each system needs

Do I need to know Lua?

Not before you start. You write your programs in Lua, a small language. The manual's guide starts from your first lines, and its reference covers every call.

Each example on the home page shows the Lua that draws it. If you query data, you write that part in SQL, inside your script.

Can I sell or share what I make?

Yes. What you make is yours. You can sell it, however much it earns, with no royalties.

To share it, send your .lua file, or a packed archive that carries its files. Anyone with DatumHue can run it, and the workstation app is free.

To reach people who don't have DatumHue:

  • With a publishing subscription, publish it on datumhue.app. People open it in their browser.
  • Inside an organization, serve it from your own servers with Enterprise. Colleagues open it in their browser.

To sell in the datumhue.app store, you need a publishing subscription. Buyers pay you through your own Stripe account, and each paid sale carries a fee.

Publishing on Platform

Does it need an internet connection?

Yes. The workstation app needs a connection to datumhue.app to run, including for your own scripts.

On datumhue.app, you accept the terms and start. There are no cookies and no analytics. Signing in with Google is optional. You need it to buy and open paid packages, and to publish.

Enterprise is different. It runs inside your own network, and only its license renewal reaches us, never your data.

Does my license expire?

No. The workstation app's license has no end date. The app runs the latest release, security fixes included, for as long as datumhue.app operates.

An Enterprise license runs for as long as you subscribe.

Can my team or class use it?

Yes. The workstation app is free for everyone. Each person can download their own, or your school or company can install it on the computers it looks after. For a pupil too young to accept its license, a parent, guardian or the school accepts it.

Lessons published on datumhue.app open in each reader's browser, with nothing to install.

For an organization, Enterprise adds shared servers and single sign-on.

DatumHue Enterprise

Can I cancel, or get a refund?

You can cancel any time. Publishing ends with the month you've paid for, and an Enterprise subscription with the period you've paid for.

Canceling doesn't refund a period you've already paid for. Your statutory rights are unaffected.
